Get Involved

Volunteers have helped Project FAIR realize its goals since its inception.  By working with experienced public benefits advocates, volunteers gain on-hands experience helping some of New York City's most vulnerable individuals and families. Project FAIR Volunteers:

  • Staff the Project FAIR Information and Referral Table - The table is currently open Monday - Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We ask that students and community members interested in becoming "Table Advocates" commit to staffing the Project FAIR table at least one shift per month for a minimum of four shifts.  All Table Advocates are paired with experienced benefits advocates while they staff the table.

  • Advocate at Fair Hearings - Interns, externs or volunteers who can commit at least 10-15 hours per week to Project FAIR for a semester or more have the opportunity to conduct fair hearing representation and advocacy on behalf of low-income or homeless households, and also may staff the table and develop other projects.  Volunteer attorneys and Table Advocates can also sign-up for referrals for individual representation on a case-by-case basis, in conjunction with a mentor attorney.

  • Conduct Community Outreach - Help Project FAIR contact and train staff and members of community-based, social service, legal service, and advocacy organizations.

  • Receive Academic Credit - Project FAIR is eager to work with ambitious students committed to our mission of social and economic justice. In the past, we have helped interested students to structure their work with Project FAIR to receive credit for academic internships, externships, fieldwork, and work-study programs.  We accept applications from insterested students on a rolling basis for semester- or year-long placements.

All Project FAIR volunteers are provided with ample training and supervision.  We encourage interested volunteers to attend a Project FAIR training and orientation session prior to commencing volunteer work with us. Please see “Resources - For Volunteers” for a list of upcoming trainings.

If you are interested in volunteering or working with Project FAIR, please contact Christopher Portelli at cportelli@nylag.org or 212-613-5060. If possible, please provide a resume and cover letter or submit a completed Volunteer Application. We look forward to hearing from you!

Lastly, please join our mailing list to receive periodic news and updates about our work!
